Udder Health Risks Rise in Summer

Warm weather and heat stress can take a serious toll on udder health — leading to higher cell counts, milk losses, and more cows leaving the herd.

When cows are heat-stressed, they stand more often and for longer periods to release body heat. This puts extra strain on their hooves, increasing the risk of lameness — and added stress overall.

At the same time, heat lowers the cow’s immunity. The immune system becomes less effective, especially when cows are in negative energy balance. Neutrophils — the cells that defend against infections like mastitis — can’t work as well, which raises the risk of disease.

The result?
More udder issues, poorer recovery, and a higher cost to production and longevity.

Udder issue cases can increase by up to

40%

in hot weather.

Bedding bacteria counts may rise by

60-80%

Farmer Experience

Testimonials

“I had a problem with SCC, after a lot of good work with AHV my cell count for the last 12 months hasn’t passed 80,000 and I haven’t needed to use any antibiotics on my cows since then.”
Riverside FarmLaois, IE
“It keeps the udder clean and we are seeing way fewer recurring issues. My AHV Consultant has been fantastic. He’s been supportive since day one and his expertise has really made a difference.”
Padraic StauntonMayo, IE
“Extra, Quick, and Aspi are my go-to products for keeping my cows’ udder health in top shape. I really believe in these products—they’re the basics for maintaining udder health. Even when margins are tight, I make sure to prioritize them.
Linda CampbellDown, IE
“You use fewer antibiotics. Over the whole year, you milk 1 to 2 liters more per cow per day, which is really a lot. If you calculate that for one lactation of the cow, it’s quite a bit of money.”
