UNDERSTANDING OUR PATENTED QSI TECHNOLOGY
AHV QUORUM SENSING INHIBITION (QSI) TECHNOLOGY
To develop our innovations, it is vital to understand the role of quorum sensing (QS) in animal health.
With our knowledge of bacteria, QS and biofilms, we are able to block bacterial communication and influence their behaviour such as biofilm formation. This is called quorum quenching (QQ).
Formation of biofilms is controlled by the QS signalling genes and their products. Various inhibitors/compounds are able to disturb the QS signalling cascade and are used as alternative therapy for optimising biofilm-related challenges. Attenuation of bacterial QS signalling by molecules derived from plants possesses inhibitory activity against bacterial and fungal biofilms (Abranches J., 2011).

Without the “protection” of biofilm, pathogenic bacteria become susceptible to immune cells, reduces the need for antibiotics.

AHV FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH: BIOFILM ERADICATION STUDIES
Our team of microbiologists is able to cultivate a wide range of bacterial biofilm in AHV’s BSL-2 laboratory. Via these bacterial biofilms, AHV is able to select the plant molecules that are able to avoid biofilm formation (MBIC) or to eradicate existing biofilms (MBEC).
This research has led to our patented innovative anti-biofilm compounds, extracted from natural resources. With our wide range of innovations and solutions for animal health, AHV supports and empowers the farming community through new standards for animal health management and care.
In multiple independent studies, mature biofilms (figure 2: Control dosage) were examined using different dosages (figure 3: High dosage) of the AHV patented QSI Technology extract (active anti-biofilm compounds).

Bacterial biofilm visualized from the top in a Nikon confocal laser scanning microscope. Green signals represent the living bacteria, red signals represent inactive bacteria. The top panel resembles the control with untreated biofilm. The bottom panel shows biofilm treated with patented AHV QSI Technology extracts. The results of the core AHV QSI Technology were measured after one day (figure 3). A clear reduction / breakdown of the biofilm was already established because of a high amount of inactive bacteria and a few living bacteria.
FROM RESEARCH TO PRODUCTS
Our patented AHV QSI Technology extract inhibits bacterial communication, avoids biofilm formation and reduces virulency. Our products promote the (natural) immune system of the body cells and support the animals’ energy and mineral metabolism.
